Historic Denver movie theater is closing after 52 years

Although I never got the chance to visit, anytime such a historic business closes, it still breaks my heart… Sadly a 52-year-old movie theater is closing up for good in Denver.

Landmark Theatres said the Denver arthouse movie theater, the Chez Artiste, will permanently close this week.

The historic theater in the University Hills Plaza, near East Yale Avenue and South Colorado Boulevard, which opened in 1972, will close Thursday (Aug. 8).

“Our last day of operation will be 8/8/2024. It has been our pleasure to serve you!” said a sign on the theater’s front door.

The theater specialized in independent film and foreign language cinema.

This is the second time in two months that Landmark Theatres closed a Denver movie theater. The Esquire Theatre at 590 Downing St. closed in the Capitol Hill neighborhood in July.
