‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ beats out ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ to become highest-grossing domestic movie

For 10 years, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” held the crown as the highest-grossing movie in the United States with $936.66 million dollars. Wednesday, that record was beaten as “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” crosses $937 million and counting.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was released on December 18, 2015 and went on to accumulate over $2 billion at the box office worldwide. When it was released, it was the first movie to make over $100 million in a single day and went on to become the highest-grossing film domestically in just 20 days.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has made over $2.453 billion across the world and became the second-fastest film to gross $1 billion in just six days time.

Spider-Man’s release with other massive box office successes such as “The Odyssey,” “Toy Story 5” and the Michael Jackson Biopic “Michael” have reinvigorated the box office with one of its strongest summers of all time. Many of the numbers have been amplified with purchases of premium movie experiences such as IMAX, 4dX and other premium formats, but has been a welcome boom for theaters and movie studios alike.
