It’s not hard to find a Dick’s Sporting Goods store around Colorado, but the state is getting its first “Dick’s House of Sport” — and if the description from the city’s own economic development director is any indication, this is not your average sporting goods store.
The 90,000-square-foot House of Sport location is being built at the Larkridge shopping center in Thornton, at 16401 Washington St. near Interstate 25 and Colorado Highway 7. The building is nearing completion and is expected to open this summer, according to 9NEWS.
“It’s a Dick’s on steroids,” said Adam Krueger, Thornton’s economic development director.
The House of Sport concept goes well beyond racks of jerseys and walls of running shoes. Based on locations already open in other states, the Thornton store is expected to feature indoor golf simulators with TrackMan technology, a multi-sport HitTrax batting cage for baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer and hockey, a full-size climbing wall with 30-day pass options, a turf field with a running track for testing gear, a dedicated golf pro shop and a House of Cleats section. Other House of Sport locations around the country range from 85,000 to 100,000 square feet and cost roughly $20 million each to build out.
The concept debuted in 2021 at Dick’s hometown store in Johnson City, New York, and has expanded rapidly since. The company opened 16 House of Sport locations in 2025 and plans to add about 14 more this year, according to its most recent earnings report. The Thornton store will sit on nearly 11 acres, filling a prime retail corridor on the north side of the Denver metro area that includes the existing Larkridge shopping center.
