Rockies fans can breathe easy — Mickey Moniak isn’t going anywhere. Just days after trade deadline buzz had some wondering if the popular outfielder might be headed out of town, the Colorado Rockies officially announced a two-year, $16.25 million contract extension that keeps Moniak in purple pinstripes through the 2028 season. The deal buys out his final year of arbitration eligibility and his first year of free agency, and it’s the first extension signed by the club since Paul DePodesta took over as president of baseball operations last November.

The numbers back up why the Rockies were not about to let him walk. Moniak hit a career-high 24 home runs with 68 RBIs last season, and he’s picked right back up in 2026, slashing .277/.318/.565 with 18 homers and 49 RBIs despite missing time with both a hand injury and ankle tendonitis. “I think Mickey’s an important part of what we’re doing here,” DePodesta said following the deadline. Moniak, 28, has said he wanted to stay put in Colorado — and the feeling is clearly mutual.

For a Rockies team that’s in the early stages of what figures to be a lengthy rebuild, retaining a veteran bat and clubhouse presence like Moniak is a meaningful piece of the puzzle. He gives younger players someone to look up to and gives fans something to cheer for while the organization works to build around its future. Coors Field just got a little more fun for the next few years.
