Even non-bowling fans know the “Who do you think you are? I am!” clip — it has tens of millions of views and is one of the most memed moments in sports history. The guy in it will be in the field for one of bowling’s most prestigious events in Colorado this week.
Weber is just one of the sport’s biggest names rolling into Northern Colorado this week for the PBA Senior U.S. Open, at Highland Park Lanes in Greeley.
The tournament runs Tuesday through Saturday, May 19-24, with qualifying rounds beginning May 20 and the stepladder finals set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday on BowlTV. The field of up to 192 bowlers — all age 50 and older — will compete in a grueling multi-day format that cuts to the top 24 for match play before narrowing to a final five for the televised championship round.
The expected roster reads like a PBA Hall of Fame roll call. Weber will be joined by Walter Ray Williams Jr., the all-time PBA Tour titles leader; two-time reigning PBA50 Player of the Year John Janawicz; Finland’s Mika Koivuniemi; Parker Bohn III; Chris Barnes; Amleto Monacelli; and Tom Hess. Tom Daugherty, who won the PBA50 World Championship just last week in Minnesota, arrives in Greeley chasing a second consecutive major title.
This marks the third straight year Highland Park Lanes has hosted the Senior U.S. Open, and co-owner Zach Endres has made no secret of why the PBA keeps coming back to the 59th Avenue center. The tournament also features a pro-am event on its opening day, giving amateur bowlers the chance to share a lane with the legends.
“The pro-am is such a special event,” Endres told the Greeley Tribune. “Even if you’re not playing in the pro-am event, I would say, just come through so you can see these athletes up close and personal.”
The Senior U.S. Open is one of five majors on the PBA50 Tour’s 45th season and the only one held in Colorado. The entire tournament will be livestreamed on BowlTV, with the stepladder finals airing live Saturday evening. Highland Park Lanes is located at 1900 59th Ave. in Greeley.
