Did It Feel Like It Rained More in Denver the Last Few Days Than You’d Ever Seen? It Probably Did

May 12, 2023, 3:18 PM

We’re no strangers to the rain in Denver this time of year, but as a Colorado native, the last few days seemed to be some of the wettest I’d ever seen. If you thought similar things, you weren’t wrong…

Thursday was the wettest day in Denver in nearly 10 years. Denver International Airport (DIA) had 4.35 inches of rain since Wednesday afternoon, as of 9:40 a.m. on Friday morning. That’s more than 30% of the city’s average annual rainfall in less than two days. It’s also Denver’s 5th-largest three-day rainstorm on record.

On Friday, the National Weather Service released a map that depicted how much snow would have fallen across Colorado in recent days if big precipitation were to fall under colder temperatures. Using a 10-to-one ‘snow-to-rain inches’ ratio, they calculated how much powder would have stacked up between May 9 and the morning of May 12. Denver, which got over four inches of rain, would have gotten more than 40 inches of snow. Some parts of the state could have gotten 60 to 72 inches.

All I can say is thank goodness it all fell as rain…
