CDOT begins mailing $75 tickets to drivers caught speeding by new cameras in work zones in Colorado

Apr 2, 2026, 10:18 AM

If you’ve been treating the I-25 North Express Lanes work zone like a personal speedway, I’ve got some bad news: The honeymoon period is officially over.

The Colorado Speed Enforcement Program is done with the gentle reminders. Drivers caught speeding between Mead and Berthoud are now being slapped with a $75 civil penalty. And honestly? After 4,000 warnings were issued since March 1, you really should have seen this coming.

The good news is that the “get it together” campaign is actually working. Officials say the threat of a camera catching your lead foot has led to a 90% drop in excessive speeding in that corridor. Apparently, nothing motivates us to follow the speed limit quite like the prospect of an unexpected bill in the mail.

If you do get tagged, you’ve got 45 days to pay up or file an appeal. Just remember that the fines aren’t exactly going toward a company yacht; the money keeps the program running, and any extra cash goes to the Vulnerable Road User Protection Fund to make our roads a little safer for everyone.

Bottom line: Slow down, keep it classy, and maybe save that $75 for something more fun than a traffic citation. We want you to make it to your destination in one piece—preferably without a fine attached to your license plate.

Stay safe out there, Denver. Your commute is long enough as it is.
