Colorado State Patrol tells drivers, ‘hit the deer, not the brakes’

If you live in Colorado long enough you’re likely to encounter a tough scenario… A deer in your path on the road. So what do you do?

The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) is urging motorists to hit the deer, not the brakes.

As part of an awareness campaign launched on Monday (Nov. 11), CSP says if other vehicles are driving behind you or you don’t have adequate time to stop when wildlife is blocking your path, the best thing to do is “drive through” the animal.

If you have time and no vehicles are driving behind you, stay in your lane, slow to a stop and honk your horn to get the animal to move, CSP says.

If you do hit an animal while driving, make sure you and your passengers are OK, the agency said. Call 911 if the animal is large and still there after you hit it, and follow the emergency dispatcher’s instructions.
