The year is 1995. A little Sheena was in fifth grade at South Street Elementary. About 45 minutes north east of the school there was a big event happening. WAY out in the middle of nowhere (at the time) the new Denver International Airport was opening. I remember hearing about how big and fancy the airport was going to be. I even remember hearing about a baggage system that was going to make the current baggage operation obsolete.

At the time, I had no idea that D.I.A. would become one of the largest and busiest airports in the country. I mean, at that time, I had only flown out of Stapleton and Colorado Springs airports and they seemed pretty big and busy to me. There was also no way for little fifth grade me, or anyone else for that matter, to know that D.I.A. would become world renowned. And not for regular airport stuff, but for conspiracy theories, secret underground tunnels, aliens, hidden U.F.O.’s and a terrifying statue. These theories are so well known, that Josh Gates filmed an episode of Expedition Unknown at the airport. Out of all of those crazy things, the only thing we can confirm is the much beloved (and intimidating) Bluecifer’s role in its creator leaving this plane of existence.

It’s hard to believe D.I.A. has only been open for 26 years. The airport has weathered a lot in that time though. From initial growing pains to a much needed renovation and expansion. But in that 26 years, it has become a very important hub for business and travel.

So here’s to you Denver International Airport… salud!!!
