Some know Shaquille O’Neal as a four-time NBA champion, others know him as electronic music producer and performer, DJ Diesel.
The latter, “DJ Diesel” being O’Neal’s DJ name, is perhaps better known to those familiar with the music festival scene. Red Rocks Amphitheatre announced that the former NBA center will perform at 6 p.m. Sunday, October 27, for his first time headlining a concert at the venue. Doors will open at 5 p.m. MT. Presale starts Thursday, May 16, at 10 a.m. MT, and tickets are available to the general public starting the next day, Friday, May 17, at 10 a.m. MT on AXS.com.
The event, dubbed “SHAQ’S BASS ALL-STARS at Red Rocks,” is advertised as the “Halloween Edition,” and will include performers Habstrakt, Riot Ten, Benda b2b Stoned Level and CELO b2b Kozmoz.
O’Neal first got his feet wet in the DJ world in the 1980s, before he went to college at Louisiana State University. O’Neal solidified his venture into music in 1993, when he released his debut rap album, “Shaq Diesel,” which received RIAA’s platinum certification. He went on to release three more rap albums while in the NBA, and he rapped on “2 Bad,” a track from Michael Jackson’s 1995 album, “HIStory.” Furthermore, the 7-foot basketball legend’s worlds of music and basketball collided in Aaron Carter’s 2001 single and music video, “That’s How I Beat Shaq.”
He introduced his DJ alter ego in 2015 and has performed at festivals such as Lollapalooza, Lost Lands and Electric Zoo. The 1999-2000 MVP released his first full-length album, “Gorilla Warfare,” in 2023.
