New Colorado bill allows motorcyclists to ride between lanes

Apr 7, 2024, 7:36 PM | Updated: Apr 8, 2024, 1:52 pm

Beginning August 7th, the new law goes into effect allowing motorcyclists to pass traffic by riding between two lanes of vehicles.

As reported on 9NEWS, Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed SB24-079 into law last Wednesday, allowing motorcycles to ride between cars if they’re stopped. The law does require the motorcycle to be traveling at 15 mph or less, though. Other stipulations are that the lanes be wide enough for safe passage, as well as, conditions must be safe.

Quoted in the original article was Tiffany Maestas, owner of the Motorcycle Rider Training Center, who said “drivers just need to be aware that it’s going to be happening. They’re going to start seeing a lot more motorcycles coming in between their car and the car next to them.”

While she mentioned concern of road rage from drivers, she does think it will help riders stay safer in stop-and-go traffic.
