Denver’s pro women’s soccer team eyes Centennial for home games temporarily

Eventually Denver’s new National Women’s Soccer League team will play a little south of downtown on a vacant 14-acre site at I-25 and Santa Fe Drive in the Santa Fe Yards. But, while that stadium is being built, the team will likely play a little further south.

A partnership between the Cherry Creek School District and Denver’s NWSL team could result in new soccer fields and a stadium in Centennial that would host the team for their first couple of seasons.

A portion of 43 acres owned by the city of Centennial – at the intersection of East Fremont Avenue and South Potomac Street and across the street from the Denver Broncos’ Dove Valley training facilities – is proposed as the Denver NWSL team’s temporary stadium for two years.

The project would include two natural grass fields and a turf field for the NWSL, along with some district uses. The project also suggests four more turf fields for shared use with the district, which includes non-tackle activities like soccer, flag football, lacrosse and other student and adult recreational sports leagues.

The project aims to create a capacity of up to approximately 15,000 temporary and 4,000 permanent seats, as well as permanent stadium facilities like locker rooms, public restrooms, concessions, press box and lighting. It also suggests site work like parking and landscaping.

The plan is still under discussion.
