CU Boulder ranks among top 25 party schools in the country

In news that will surprise absolutely no one who has ever set foot on the Hill, the University of Colorado Boulder has landed at No. 17 on USA Today’s ranking of the top 25 party schools in the United States. The list was compiled by averaging seven separate party school rankings, including Niche.com and the Wall Street Journal, and takes into account everything from football culture and Greek life to social scenes and location. In other words, it’s a formula CU was basically born to dominate.
This isn’t exactly new territory for the Buffs. CU has been showing up on party school lists for decades — it was literally ranked the No. 1 party school in America by Niche back in 2003 and again in 2011. The school’s annual April 20 “smokeout” on campus became so legendary it once drew an estimated 10,000 people, years before Colorado even legalized recreational marijuana in 2012. So landing at 17 in 2026 almost feels like CU is showing restraint.
On Niche’s standalone 2026 rankings, CU Boulder sits at No. 14 nationally with an A+ Party Scene grade, and is the undisputed No. 1 party school in the state of Colorado, with Colorado State coming in second. The rankings factor in student surveys, access to bars and restaurants, athletics and Greek life.
Tulane topped the USA Today list overall, followed by Alabama, Florida State, Georgia and Wisconsin. CU slotted in at 17, just behind Syracuse and just ahead of Illinois and Howard, which tied at 18. For a school that’s simultaneously earning national academic recognition, CU ranks No. 105 globally per U.S. News & World Report, the party school badge is less a scarlet letter and more a point of pride.
