Cooling centers open around Denver metro: What you need to know

Jul 12, 2024, 2:44 PM | Updated: 2:44 pm

As the triple-digit-heat wave moves in this weekend, those without access to air conditioning can visit one of the several cooling centers that will be open around the state.

From Friday to Sunday, temperatures could range from 100 to 102 degrees. Not everyone can seek refuge in a cool home, so cities have opened up public spaces to provide a place to cool down.

Aurora

When temperatures reach 99 degrees and above, the city of Aurora opens its emergency cooling stations. Anyone is welcome to stop by any of the locations to cool down.

The city says library locations are open Monday through Saturday, and the Aurora Day Resource Center is open Sundays. Community members can go to the following cooling stations:

  • Central Library
    14949 E. Alameda Pkwy.
    Monday – Saturday: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
    Sunday: Closed
  • Chambers Plaza Library
    1551 N. Chambers Road
    Monday – Saturday: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
    Sunday: Closed
  • Hoffman Library
    1298 Peoria St.
    Monday – Saturday: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
    Sunday: Closed
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Library
    9898 E. Colfax Ave.
    Monday – Saturday: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
    Sunday: Closed
  • Aurora Day Resource Center
    13387 E. 19th Place
    24/7 Facility: 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Denver

The City and County of Denver is helping residents stay cool.

Denver Parks and Recreation has opened all operating recreation centers as daytime cooling centers. They will be open during business hours and offer drinking water, restrooms and a place to relax.

The city has also opened 2601 W. 7th Ave. as a cooling center on Sunday from 4-8 p.m.

Denver Public Libraries will also offer a shelter from the heat. The library’s website has a list of locations and operating hours.

The Denver Rescue Mission is opening its doors to homeless residents who need to escape the heat. They will provide water, meals and overnight shelter for men.

Thornton

The city of Thornton has opened two recreation centers as cooling shelters this weekend.

Trail Winds and Carpenter  Recreation Centers will be open during normal business hours. The lobbies of both facilities will offer relief from the heat.

Westminster

When heat advisories are issued by the Westminster Fire Department for major or extreme heat events, the city will open recreation centers and libraries as cooling centers.

The following facilities may be available this weekend:

  • City Park Recreation Center – 10455 N. Sheridan Blvd.
  • City Park Fitness Center – 10475 Sheridan Blvd.
  • West View Recreation Center – 10747 W. 108th Ave.
  • Swim & Fitness Center – 3290 W. 76th Ave.
  • The MAC – 3295 W. 72nd Ave.
  • Countryside Pool – 10470 Oak St.
  • Irving Street Library – 7392 Irving St.
  • College Hill Library – 3705 W. 112th Ave.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said you can call 211 and get assistance finding cooling centers in your area.
