Cameras will be used on I-25 ‘gap’ in Colorado to nab drivers that cross the double lines

If you’re one of the thousands of the drivers who use the I-25 gap, the portion of interstate highway between Castle Rock and Monument, know that cameras will be turned on this year to watch for anyone crossing the double white lines between the main travel lanes and the express lane.

As reported on the KKTV 11News website, these cameras will be activated sometime in 2024, which CDOT spokesperson Tim Hoover is calling the The Safety Enforcement System.

Upon activation at the gap, motorists who traverse the dual white lines dividing the express toll lane from the unrestricted lanes will face a fee. Hoover indicates a $75 penalty will be issued to the vehicle’s owner on record, escalating to $150 if not settled within 20 days. Comparable technology is currently in use on various key routes like the I-70 mountain corridor and C-470.

Hoover remarked, “once the system is in place, [drivers] are really going to be in hot water if that’s a habit because the system is highly, highly effective, and the odds of them being able to do this — which is very dangerous — and not get caught are very low,” adding “it’s illegal right now to do that, and so if [drivers] are doing it, they are risking getting pulled over and getting a ticket that way.”
