Wyoming Wrestler Jumps on Grizzly Bear to Save His Friend

Oct 18, 2022, 5:27 PM

I think most of us here in Colorado view our neighbors to the north in Wyoming as tough folks, and this right here proves that theory once and for all.

A college wrestler from Wyoming helped his teammate survive a grizzly bear attack over the weekend by trying to wrestle the massive bear off his friend, eventually drawing a more brutal attack to himself.

The men credit their bonds as wrestling teammates at Northwest College in Cody, Wyoming, with helping them survive the attack Saturday evening southeast of Yellowstone National Park.

The bear attacked Brady Lowry, from Utah first. Then Kendell Cummings, from Evanston, Wyoming  jumped onto the bear’s back to try to free Lowry but that led the bear to start attacking Cummings.

The men were able to call 911 from near the scene and other recreationists in the area were able to get them to the trailhead, where they met search and rescue teams. Cummings was flown to the hospital by helicopter while Lowry was taken by ambulance.

Cummings received 60 staples in his head and plastic surgery to address major lacerations to his face, major lacerations to his left arm and leg that doctors had to suture up, and stitches on his right hand and right leg.

Lowry suffered a broken arm and lacerations to his back, shoulders, right leg and thigh.

Lowry was scheduled to be released from the hospital Monday while Cummings is expected to be released later this week.
