Water restrictions begin March 25 as Denver faces near-record low snowpack

Mar 19, 2026, 9:52 AM | Updated: 9:53 am

With our mountain snowpack dipping to near-record lows, Denver Water is officially moving to combat dry conditions. Beginning March 25, new seasonal water restrictions will take effect across the metro area to ensure our community maintains a reliable supply of water throughout the coming months.

The snowpack, which serves as our natural reservoir, is currently tracking significantly below the seasonal average. By acting now, local officials hope to manage demand before the heat of summer settles in.

“We all love our beautiful Colorado lawns and gardens, but we have to be mindful of the bigger picture,” said a spokesperson for KOSI 101.1. “We’re a community that looks out for one another, and that includes being smart about how we use our water so there’s plenty to go around for everyone.”

What to Know for Your Household:

  • The Start Date: Restrictions officially begin Monday, March 25.

Anticipated March 25 Stage 1 Drought Rules:

    • Water during cooler times of the day — lawn watering is NOT allowed between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
    • Watering more than two days is not allowed.
    • Do not allow water to pool in gutters, streets and alleys.
    • Do not waste water by letting it spray on concrete and asphalt.
    • Repair leaking sprinkler systems within 10 days.

These rules aren’t just about the lawn; they’re about conservation. Whether you’re a long-time resident or new to the Mile High City, every gallon saved makes a difference in our high-altitude climate. If conditions worsen, restrictions could become even tighter. Officials say one-day-per-week watering limits are possible later this summer if the region remains hot and dry.
