Watch your small pets – coyotes are snatching them around Denver

If you’ve got small pets that spend time outdoors by themselves in the Denver area, you need to keep a closer eye on them for the time being.

According to the Broomfield Police Department, three reports have recently been received related to dogs that have been killed due to coyotes. The attacks have taken place in and around the Anthem neighborhood, which is located on the northeast side of town.

Coyotes are opportunistic hunters, known for preying on a wide range of species, basically, whatever animal is vulnerable and small enough for them to attack. Even a fence won’t keep pets safe from coyotes, as the species is able to scale the typical six-foot fence “with ease.” Authorities also warned that standing in the doorway to watch a pet while it’s outside is not enough to deter a coyote from entering the yard. Pets owners were urged to be within five feet of their pets at all times.

The Broomfield Police Department also included the following tips for keeping pets safe:

  • Keep dogs on a short leash (6 ft. or less)
  • Avoid known or potential den sites and areas of thick vegetation
  • Do not allow dogs to “play” with coyotes or foxes
  • Do not leave pet food and water bowls outside
  • Always supervise your pet outside, including fenced backyards
  • Keep cats indoors

The Town of Erie Police Department also recently informed the public that a small dog was presumably snatched up by a mountain lion.
