My grandma always used to tell me that the full moon brought out the crazies So watch out tonight (Aug. 19) because they may be extra crazy!
A rare astronomical event will take place tonight, where a full moon will simultaneously be a supermoon and a blue moon, creating a “super blue moon.”
This alignment occurs when the moon is both closest to Earth in its orbit and the third full moon in a season with four full moons.
Definitions of what constitutes a supermoon or blue moon vary, but this event is particularly uncommon, with the next similar occurrence likely not happening until January 2037.
The size difference of a supermoon compared to an average full moon is not noticeably different to the naked eye, according to NASA. Supermoons generally appear 14% larger than the average full moon — or the difference between a nickel and quarter. This supermoon will be about 16% brighter than an average full moon.
