Passengers rejoice! TSA to relax shoe restrictions at security checkpoints

Jul 8, 2025, 12:03 PM | Updated: 12:06 pm

After almost 20 years of having to wear shoes through TSA security checkpoints at airports, the TSA is reportedly set to relax those restrictions, at some airports at least.

News outlets across the country have announced the decision say that several airports across the country will eliminate the requirement as of this week, including Baltimore/Washington International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport and Fort Lauderdale International Airport. Some airports such as Sacramento International airport said those new rules went into effect on Monday. No word yet when Denver International Airport may remove those restrictions.

TSA began requiring the shoe’s-off requirement back in 2006 following the infamous “shoe bomber” Richard Reid trying to ignite explosives in his shoes.
