Let’s be real here, most rest stops on the highway are nothing more than a parking spot and some bathrooms that haven’t been cleaned in awhile. But a new one in Colorado is as state-of-the-art as a rest area can get and it set the state back $24 million.
The new rest area is located at 11,000 feet on Vail Pass along Interstate 70 and opens on September 30th.
There will be 175 new parking spaces and 12 restroom facilities with redundant systems. The rest area will have its own water treatment plant and will transform recreation access for snowmobilers, providing dedicated trailer parking instead of roadside parking along I-70.
It’ll also feature observation decks and storyboards telling the history of the I-70 region.
