If you’re doing some gardening or lawn work this weekend, the Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure has a gift for you.

DOTI is hosting its annual mulch giveaway on Saturday, May 4, but this year they have added free compost too.

The giveaway is for Denver residents only and proof of residency will be required.

Dig-your-own mulch will be available while supplies last from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at two locations:

  • Denver Central Platte Campus, North Entrance
    • Enter through the campus gates at 2000 W. 3rd Ave., turn right at the stop sign and follow the signs for the mulch giveaway
    • Compost also available at this location
  • Havana Nursery
    • 10450 Smith Rd.
    • Freeloading service available for trucks and small, one-axle trailers

Be sure to bring your own supplies, like a rake or a shovel, as well as containers for loading mulch or a tarp to cover trucks and trailers.

A limited number of coupons for free compost are available. Those who wish to take some of the compost must register to receive a coupon, which can be done online. Coupons will not be given out onsite.

Those who sign up for the coupon should receive an electronic confirmation number from Solid Waste Management. Be sure to bring that confirmation number, along with a shovel, proof of residency and a five-gallon bucket. There is a limit of one five-gallon bucket of compost per resident.
