Denver police dog rescues missing elderly woman clinging to tree above steep ravine

May 9, 2024, 4:16 PM | Updated: 4:56 pm

A police dog in Colorado recently helped rescue an 85-year-old woman who was lost in a ravine. K-9 Mercury, along with his handler Officer Austin Speer of the Greenwood Village Police Department, quickly found the woman after sniffing out her scent. The dog, fondly called Merc, located her holding on for dear life to a tree on the side of a steep ravine, where she couldn’t be seen from the road above.

Within just 10 minutes of initiating the search, Mercury found the elderly woman, bringing great relief to her family. Video of the moment shows Officer Speer reassuring the woman as the pup approaches her. The woman’s son expressed gratitude on social media for the quick and efficient rescue, saying it was like a “Navy Seal extraction.”

Mercury, who joined the Greenwood Village Police force a year and a half ago, is trained to find missing persons and detect narcotics. Thanks to his skills and the teamwork of the police department, the woman was safely reunited with her grateful family.
