In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Linda Jamison of Colorado Springs drove over 25 hours to Swannanoa, North Carolina, to help support survivors.
She spent a week and a half in a camper she’d bought with her savings, cooking and serving meals for nearly 1,000 people affected by the hurricane. With no other options to get a hot meal, she says her services were in high demand and she was being called upon to feed over 100 people a day.
Jamison became known for her rice pudding and beanie weenies and adapted her cooking based on whatever ingredients she had available. Alongside volunteers, she also prepared meals for elderly and disabled individuals who couldn’t reach the food distribution locations. Local residents drove her around the affected areas, including a trailer park that was completely destroyed, which deeply moved her.
Before returning to Colorado, Jamison decided to give her camper to a resident who’d lost their home in the storm and that’s how she met Tony. He’d been staying in a hotel after his home was destroyed by the hurricane. Jamison offered him the camper so he could stay on his land while awaiting FEMA assistance.
Now back in Colorado, Jamison is encouraging others to continue to provide assistance for those affected by the storm, noting that the work is far from over and many survivors are still struggling without nearby food sources and shelter.
