I was born and raised in Greeley, Colorado, and hands down one of my favorite parts of my hometown was the little family-owned restaurant with the best pies in the world, Fat Albert’s. Sadly though, after 42 years the family will be closing the iconic restaurant…
On March 1, 1982 the restaurant opened in the tiny south end of a bank building on 23rd ave. in Greeley. The restaurant, although not an Irish pub, was known for their love of St. Patrick’s Day, and their annual celebration on the holiday each March.
Homemade menu items such as their Monte Cristo and Rueben sandwich were popular, but the star of the show was always the dessert, specifically the pies…
A few of the highlights include the cherry pie, chocolate cream pie, carrot cake, chocolate zucchini cake and the Peanut Butter Supreme Pie, which is the top seller, and helped the restaurant win awards for years, and even caught the attention of the popular television show “Dateline” and NBC News.
In a social post the restaurant thanked Greeley and Northern Colorado while saying in part, “it’s time for us to say goodbye to Fat Albert’s restaurant as we close our doors. For 42 years, Fat Albert’s has been more than just a place to eat—it’s been a home away from home, a space where friends became family, and where memories were made around tables filled with love, laughter, and delicious food. It has been our greatest honor to be part of your lives, from celebrating your special moments to simply sharing a smile over a favorite dish. Our final day of service will be August 31st. We invite you to join us in these last days to share in the memories, the stories, and the meals that have made Fat Albert’s so special.”
