Military tank shows up on Arvada street Friday during neighbor dispute, HBO captures it all for docuseries

A decade-long neighborhood feud in Arvada went from petty to full-blown absurdity on Friday night when an armored military vehicle showed up on Lamar Drive while HBO cameras were rolling.

Lamar Drive resident Chris Hunnel told FOX31 he and his neighbor, identified only as Mark, have been at each other’s throats for the better part of 10 years. The beef apparently started over a boat parked in a driveway in the Lake Arbor neighborhood, which has an optional $35-a-year HOA. The feud got juicy enough to land both of them on Season 2 of “Neighbors,” an HBO documentary series produced by A24 that follows real-life neighbor disputes across the country. The show premiered in February and was renewed for a second season in March. Crews had been filming on Lamar Drive for about a week when things went sideways.

On Friday night, while Hunnel was in the middle of a shoot, someone parked an armored military vehicle right next to his home, complete with a banner on the side that read “Make me move it,” followed by some words we can’t repeat on a country radio station’s website. Neither Chris nor Mark is taking credit for it. Mark told an Arvada police officer on Saturday, “I didn’t do that. I didn’t coordinate any of this, I didn’t order any of this, I didn’t ask for any of this.” The show’s director apparently warned the crew “something was coming” but wouldn’t say what, which is the kind of vague heads-up that normally precedes a birthday cake, not an armored personnel carrier.

Then it got worse. Hunnel says another neighbor got into it with Mark, who started hurling insults, including some choice words about the neighbor’s wife. That neighbor pulled out a gun. He didn’t point it at anyone and didn’t fire it, but by that point, any remaining chill on Lamar Drive was long gone. The Arvada Police Department’s David Snelling said officers didn’t even know HBO was shooting in town and were never notified about the production, which typically requires a city permit, especially when it involves rolling a military vehicle through a residential neighborhood. “This may have been one of those where the police department would’ve been flagged that there was an armored personnel carrier,” Snelling said. He added that the investigation is ongoing with “multiple potential charges with multiple people being potential suspects.” So far, neighbors have refused to share surveillance footage. FOX31 reached out to both HBO and A24 for comment but hadn’t heard back as of Saturday.
