First it was sourdough bread during COVID. Then everyone you know was naming their starter and posting crusty loaves on Instagram. Now sourdough has made its way into breakfast. Sourdough donut trucks are popping up around the west, and northern Colorado has its own: Auntie Jo’s Donuts, a family-run truck making handmade sourdough donuts fresh every day.
What’s the big deal with sourdough donuts? Fans say the natural starter gives them a little extra chew and a light tang under the glaze. They’re pillowy and a bit fancy, but they’re still donuts. One customer called them “the best donuts I’ve ever had in my life.”
Auntie Jo’s is based in Cheyenne, but it spends a good part of the week on the Colorado side of the border. This week’s stops included Greeley on Tuesday, Wellington and Kersey on Wednesday and a Saturday morning stop on East Prospect Road in Fort Collins. On Saturday evening, the truck heads to Loveland for Santa’s arrival at Bass Pro Shops, from 4 to 8 p.m. You can watch Santa cruise in on a pontoon boat with a sourdough donut in hand.
A single donut costs $3.50, and a dozen is $33. The truck also has a banana cream pie special for $6 if you want to go all out. Most stops run from about 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and the schedule changes every week, so check the Auntie Jo’s website or sign up for its weekly email before you go. Denver folks, a donut run to Fort Collins counts as a road trip, and road trips need snacks.
