Broncos fans have heard Peyton Manning call audibles, sell pizza, host the CMA Awards and join the stars at concerts throughout the city. Now we get to hear him on an actual recorded country song. The former Denver quarterback teamed up with Riley Green on “Alabama Vs. Tennessee,” a college football rivalry duet released Monday.
The song gets right to the trash talk. Green takes the Alabama side, and Manning, the University of Tennessee legend, sticks up for his Volunteers. “I can yell ‘Roll Tide,’ sing ‘Rocky Top’ all night,” they sing, before agreeing the loser buys the beer. Underneath the jabs, the song is a friendly reminder that two rival fans can share a bar, a pair of boots and a love of country music. The chorus sums it up: “It ain’t you going up against me, it’s just Alabama vs. Tennessee.”
The music video is set in a honky-tonk. Coverage says Manning looks a little nervous at first and loosens up after a few beers. He’s not about to trade his football career for a record deal, but he holds his own next to Green. That fits Manning’s run in Denver, where he went 45-12 as a starter, set the single-season touchdown record in 2013 and won Super Bowl 50 before riding off into retirement.
The timing is no accident. Alabama and Tennessee play Saturday, and the song came out a couple of weeks after Green released his 19-track album “That’s Just Me.” Whoever wins, Broncos Country gets to hear No. 18 harmonize, and that may be the best audible he’s called since retiring.
