Erik Johnson spent nearly 15 years guarding the Avalanche blue line. Now he’s guarding a pretty impressive real estate return.
The retired Avs defenseman and his wife, Jackie, have listed their Cherry Hills Village estate for $14.5 million. That’s roughly double the $7.2 million they paid in July 2022, just weeks after Johnson lifted the Stanley Cup with Colorado. So the 2022 title run turned out to be a good investment on and off the ice.
The home sits on just over 3 gated acres in Old Cherry Hills, tucked behind a canopy of trees. It was built in 1972 and has been heavily renovated since the Johnsons bought it. It now covers 11,242 square feet with six bedrooms and 12 bathrooms. Yes, 12, which works out to two per bedroom and makes it about the only house in Colorado where nobody ever waits for a bathroom. Jackie runs the interior design firm Jackie Johnson Design, and she led the redo herself. Outside, you get a pool and spa, a koi pond, a rose garden, a fire pit, terraces and an original barn.
Avs fans know the rest of EJ’s story. The Avalanche got him from St. Louis in a 2011 trade. He left after the 2022-23 season for stints in Buffalo and Philadelphia, then came home when Colorado traded for him ahead of the 2025 deadline. He played his final NHL game in an Avs sweater during the first-round series against Dallas that spring and officially retired last Oct. 1. These days he’s on TV as an NHL analyst for ESPN. And with the Avs opening their season tonight (Sept. 30) against the Kings at Ball Arena, it’s a good night to remember one of the best defensemen in franchise history. Just maybe skip the $14.5 million souvenir.
