Midnight Magic: Avalanche Stun Kings in OT After Wild Night at Ball Arena

Apr 22, 2026, 12:07 AM | Updated: 12:11 am

It took overtime, and just minutes before the clock struck midnight, the Colorado Avalanche secured a thrilling Game 2 win at Ball Arena.

Newcomer Nicolas Roy played hero, scoring the game-winner in overtime to lift the Avs to a 2–1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings and give Colorado a 2–0 series lead.

But overtime wasn’t the only thing keeping fans up late.

Early in the second period, the game was delayed nearly 20 minutes after the glass behind the Los Angeles bench shattered, sending debris onto players and coaches. The bizarre moment came just after a huge penalty-shot save by Scott Wedgewood, igniting the crowd before the arena crew worked to repair the damage.

It took more than 50 minutes for the first goal of the night, when Artemi Panarin broke through for Los Angeles. But the Avs answered when captain Gabriel Landeskog delivered the equalizer, sending Ball Arena into a frenzy and forcing overtime.

Colorado had to weather an early push in OT, including a near game-winner from Nathan MacKinnon that was blocked with an open net.

Moments later, the Avs cashed in.

After a shot from Josh Manson was blocked, Roy battled in front and buried the rebound for the game-winner, sending Colorado to Los Angeles with a commanding 2–0 series lead and all the momentum heading into Game 3.
