Person who stole Colorado dog returns it with a note saying they were drunk

Jul 28, 2026, 4:06 PM

A lot of us have had a drunk moment we regret, but this one may take the cake…

Someone stole a dog from a Colorado Springs backyard in broad daylight — and then brought him back four days later with a handwritten note that said, “I’m very sorry for what I did.”

Blanco, a 3-year-old dog owned by Paul Torrez, was taken from his backyard on a Wednesday afternoon. Security camera footage showed a stranger walking through the gate, removing Blanco’s collar and carrying the dog away — while Blanco appeared to resist the whole time.

Torrez, who lives alone and calls Blanco his companion, did what any desperate pet owner would do: He got the word out. The community responded. And then, early Sunday morning, the same person who took Blanco showed up at the same gate, returned the dog and left the apology note behind. The note said in part, “I was not in the right state of mind, I was very drunk.”

Torrez thanked the community for helping spread the word and for the outpouring of support. As for Blanco, he is reportedly doing fine.
