LOOK – World’s biggest wildlife crossing bridge under construction on I-25 south of Denver

I live in the Monument area, and I commute to the Denver Tech Center each day to work here at KYGO. So, twice a day, I encounter bridge construction on I-25 on my way to and from work. I always assumed the bridge was for cars, but today my curiosity got the best of me and I did some looking. What I found is really interesting…
The bridge I speak of is the “Greenland Wildlife Overpass” in Douglas County, and it’s essentially a bridge over the highway for animals. The goal is to protect wildlife from being hit by vehicles.
These bridges are becoming more popular in Colorado, but this particular bridge will be the biggest one in the world! It will cover six lanes of I-25 and will create 39,000 acres of land together. The overpass will be 204 feet wide and will cost $15 million.
The overpass is a critical component of the overall wildlife crossing system that is expected to reduce wildlife-vehicle crashes along this stretch of I-25 by 90 percent.
The bridge is expected to be finished in December.
