Reservations for Colorado’s iconic Hanging Lake trail reopen March 17

Mar 13, 2025, 4:42 PM | Updated: 8:13 pm

It’s arguably the most well-known hike in a state known for it’s hiking, but Colorado’s Hanging Lake trail has been closed off and on since last summer for repairs. Lucky for us, it’ll be back open this summer, but you need to reserve a spot.

The trail located in the Glenwood Canyon was severely damaged by the Grizzly Creek wildfire in 2020 and subsequent burn-scar debris flows caused by torrential rains in 2021. Therefore, repairs were being done, but while crews were at it, they were also modernizing it by making it more user-friendly and better able to withstand runoff from summer downpours.

Project managers expect most of the work to be finished by July 1, the first day for which reservations will be available starting this Monday (Mar. 17) at 8 a.m.

Reservations will cost $12 per person and will be available through the Visit Glenwood website. Trail reconstruction was funded by Great Outdoors Colorado, the Colorado Lottery, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the National Forest Foundation, city of Glenwood Springs and the U.S. Forest Service.
