They may not be as popular as they once were, but when it comes to bookstores in Colorado, one name stands way above the rest — Tattered Cover. But is that name going to be history soon?

After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2023, Tattered Cover is being bought by the largest retail bookseller in the U.S., Barnes and Noble, for $1,833,402 in cash.

Established in 1971, Tattered Cover now has locations in Aurora, Littleton, Union Station and Colfax Avenue. It also licenses its name to shops at Denver International Airport.

So, with the new ownership, will the name change? The quick easy answer is no — while Tattered Cover will no longer be independently owned, the name will stay the same. According to the documents, Barnes & Noble will continue with the name “Tattered Cover.”
