Should you water your lawn this winter? We haven’t had much snow. How does that factor into our lawns and plants?
Yes, you should water your yard in Colorado during the winter, particularly when there has been no snow or moisture for 3-4 weeks and temperatures are above 40 degrees., according to the Denver Botanic Gardens.
Do not fire up your sprinkler system yet but get your hose out. Some water is better than no water. Start with plants that are new to the landscape.
Then move the hose and focus on young trees, evergreens, and shrubs, watering 1-2 times per month around midday.
When watering, apply water slowly to the “drip line” (the outer edge of the branches). A general rule is 10 gallons per inch of tree diameter.
Remember to always disconnect and drain hoses after use to prevent freezing and pipe damage.
