Xcel Warns of Possible Power Shutoffs Amid High Fire Danger

Feb 15, 2026, 10:21 AM

Xcel Energy has sent notices to customers across the Front Range warning that high winds and elevated fire danger could lead to possible power shutoffs early this week.

In an email to customers Saturday, Xcel urged residents to “take steps to prepare for potential wildfires and power outages now.” The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Watch beginning Tuesday morning, with wind gusts potentially reaching 60 mph. Winds are expected to begin increasing Sunday afternoon.

So what does this mean for you?

While conditions may change between now and midweek, Xcel is encouraging customers to prepare in case Public Safety Power Shutoffs become necessary. Here are some tips:

  • Set your refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting to help keep food safe (up to four hours in the fridge, up to 48 hours in the freezer).

  • Turn off or unplug electrical appliances to prevent damage from power surges when electricity is restored.

  • Consider purchasing portable charger banks and stock up on batteries.

  • Designate a safe outdoor space for generators, grills, or camp stoves — never operate them indoors or in enclosed areas.

  • Practice opening your garage door manually in case of an outage.

Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware and monitor updates as fire conditions develop.
