When is the Best Time to See the Supermoon in Colorado Tonight?

Aug 30, 2023, 5:10 PM

Tonight’s (Aug. 30th) “blue, supermoon” will be the brightest, biggest moon of the year.

The best time to see it tonight in Colorado is around 9 p.m. when it’s low in the horizon.

“A supermoon occurs when the Moon’s orbit is closest (perigee) to Earth at the same time the Moon is full,” according to NASA The result is some of the best moon viewing. This specific supermoon will be the brightest of the year due to how close it is to earth. A perigean full moon appears slightly larger and brighter than a typical or apogean full moon. According to NASA, the closest perigean full moon appears about 17% bigger and 30% brighter than the farthest apogean moon.

A blue moon occurs when there are two full moons in the same calendar month, according to NASA. There is nothing blue in color about tonight’s moon.

There won’t be another blue supermoon until 2037, according to Italian astronomer Gianluca Masi, founder of the Virtual Telescope Project.
