USA Men Capture First Olympic Gold Since 1980 “Miracle on Ice”

Feb 22, 2026, 9:11 AM

Team USA men’s hockey is bringing home Olympic gold for the first time, 46 years to the day of the legendary “Miracle on Ice” in 1980. The Americans secured the title in dramatic fashion this morning, defeating Team Canada 2–1 in overtime. The game-winning goal came just under two minutes into the extra period, sealing a historic victory over their longtime rivals.

New Jersey Devils star Jack Hughes delivered the golden moment, scoring the overtime winner against a stacked Canadian roster that included Colorado Avalanche standouts Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar. Hughes’ heroics were even more remarkable after he lost several front teeth late in the third period following a high stick to the mouth — returning to score the biggest goal of the tournament.

This marks the first U.S. men’s hockey gold medal since the 1980 Lake Placid Games, when the Americans stunned the Soviet Union before defeating Finland to claim the title. While this run may not yet have a Hollywood film attached to it, it stands as one of the greatest victories in USA Hockey history.

Adding to the celebration, the United States captured gold in both men’s and women’s hockey this year — a dominant showing on the world stage.
