Two Colorado cities rank among the 10 safest places to drive in America

Aug 24, 2026, 3:54 PM

If you’ve watched someone weave in and out of traffic at 95 MPH on I-25 and wondered whether Colorado drivers are actually any good, Allstate just settled the debate, and the answer is yes, apparently, as long as you’re not in Denver.

The insurance company’s 2026 America’s Best Drivers Report ranked the 200 most populated U.S. cities by how often their drivers get into accidents, and two Colorado cities cracked the top 10. Fort Collins came in at No. 2 in the entire country, second only to Brownsville, Texas, with drivers there averaging nearly 15 years between collisions. Colorado Springs, meanwhile, jumped 15 spots from last year’s rankings to land at No. 8 nationally, a new entry in the top 10 with drivers averaging 12.68 years between wrecks. Allstate specifically noted that “Texas and Colorado cities lead the best drivers list,” and it’s not hard to see why, with two of the top eight spots belonging to the Centennial State.

For context, the national average is 10.86 years between collisions. In Boston, the worst city on the list, drivers average just 3.76 years, meaning they’re 189% more likely to get into an accident than the national average. Washington, D.C. and Baltimore round out the bottom three, and seven of the 10 riskiest cities are in the Northeast. So the next time someone from Massachusetts gives you grief about your Colorado driving, feel free to share these numbers.

The full top 10: Brownsville, Texas; Fort Collins; Boise, Idaho; Laredo, Texas; Cary, North Carolina; Madison, Wisconsin; McAllen, Texas; Colorado Springs; Eugene, Oregon; and Olathe, Kansas. Denver, for what it’s worth, did not crack the top 10, but at least we’re not Boston.
