Tucker Wetmore reveals how a football injury led to music career

One of the biggest rising stars in country music is Tucker Wetmore, and it seems like he’s been on a rocket ship climbing up the charts.

Growing up in a small town in Washington, Wetmore graduated with a class of just 69 kids before heading to Montana to play college football.

“My plan was just to go to college and play as much ball as I could and then hopefully make it in the draft at some point,” he told People.com. “But my grades were terrible. I sucked at the school part.”

After partying a lot during his freshman year at Montana Tech, Wetmore realized that he was lost.

“I would sleep on my buddy’s couch after practice, and I remember sitting my stuff down one night and going into the bathroom and I just started bawling,” he said. “I mean, I was just hysterically weeping. I knew in my gut that I wasn’t on the right path. I just needed a sign whether to stay or go.”

Things changed on the first day of spring practice.

“We ran a post over the middle, and I ended up blowing out my entire right leg. I remember my first thought was, ‘This really freaking hurts.’ And then my second thought was, ‘That’s my sign right there.’ I got my sign on the ground in the middle of the field on the 45-yard line.”

Eventually music ended up becoming his backup plan, Wetmore decided to make the move to Nashville in 2020 where things began to go in his favor.

His debut single “Wine into Whiskey”, which you can hear on 98.5 KYGO, went viral with over 36 million streams.

“It’s everything I’ve worked super hard on, but just to see it all come to life is just surreal. It’s overwhelming in all the good ways,” Wetmore said.

Wetmore then followed that song up with another hit, “Wind Up Missin’ You” that he wrote with hit songwriters Chris LaCorte and Thomas Archer.

On May 24, the rising star released another single called, “What Would You Do?”

Wetmore will be in town on September 23 at Red Rocks opening up for Cole Swindell and Clay Walker. You can get you tickets here.
