The Lies You Should Absolutely Tell in a Job Interview

Mar 9, 2026, 9:35 AM | Updated: 10:04 am

Look, I’m a firm believer in honesty. But job interviews? That’s a whole different beast, and I’m giving you permission to be strategically creative with the truth.

Lie #1: Why You’re Leaving Your Current Job

Did your boss micromanage you into a stress rash? Did you cry in the bathroom more than you peed in it? Your interviewer doesn’t want to hear it.

Channel your inner pageant queen: “I’ve loved my time there, but I feel I’ve exhausted all the development opportunities.” Same energy as “I want world peace,” but for adults.

Lie #2: How Many Other Offers You Have

Even if this job is the only thing standing between you and your mom’s basement, never let them know that. Think of it like dating in your 20s—you never told a guy he was the only one texting you back, did you? Scarcity creates value, babe.

Lie #3: Your “Gap Year” Dreams

Planning to backpack through Thailand next year? That’s between you, your Pinterest board, and your passport. If you mention it, all they hear is: “I’m using this job as an ATM for my Eat, Pray, Love fantasy.”

Lie #4: Your Secret Empire

Got a side hustle? Building your Etsy empire? Love that for you. But zip it.

The second you mention “entrepreneurial dreams,” they picture you answering Shopify emails during the 2 pm meeting.

Bottom line: Interviews aren’t about radical honesty. They’re about presenting the most hireable version of yourself.

Now go get that job. Mama needs new throw pillows. 🛋️
