Tesla goes ‘Mad Max’ mode, allowing self-driving cars to exceed speed limit

Oct 24, 2025, 4:33 PM | Updated: 4:34 pm

Tesla has brought back its “Mad Max” mode that allows its self-driving cars to blow past the speed limit. This is a real feature in the car.

“Yahoo News” says Tesla has reintroduced its “Mad Max” self-driving mode feature that allows cars to reach higher speeds and make more frequent lane changes.

The resurrection of the feature comes in an update to Tesla’s new FSD v14 overhaul, which first launched last week and received a new patch on Wednesday night. It “comes with higher speeds and more frequent lane changes than Hurry,” Tesla wrote in the release notes, referring to its other driving mode that prioritizes speed.

The ‘Mad Max’ mode is the next mode after Tesla’s ‘Hurry’ option.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into Tesla following reports of violations and crashes.

Electrek says, “It hasn’t been out for 24 hours, and it has already been spotted rolling stop signs and driving more than 15 mph over the speed limit.”

Fans seem to enjoy the feature. “Mad Max mode is INSANE,” said Tesla enthusiast Nic Cruz Patane, adding that it “weaves through traffic at an incredible pace” and that it “drives your car like a sports car.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched numerous probes into Tesla, including one focused on a crash captured on video in which a car in FSD killed an elderly woman while its camera vision was obstructed by sunlight. Last week, the agency launched more investigations into 2.88 million Tesla cars installed with FSD after receiving nearly 60 reports of the vehicles violating traffic laws and getting into crashes.
