Russell Wilson to be benched by the Broncos this weekend

Dec 27, 2023, 10:47 AM

Denver, CO-  According to The Denver Post, several sources have indicated that the Denver Broncos will be benching their embattled quarterback Russell Wilson beginning this weekend.

Despite a 5 game winning streak after a weak 1-5 start getting them back into playoff talks, the Broncos have lost 2 games in a row including what was expected to be an easy game against a struggling New England Patriots team last weekend.

The Broncos are expected to start Jarrett Stidham to conclude the season.  While they are obviously hoping this may begin the next chapter for their team, there is also other potential reasoning as Russell has a clause in his contract that would guarantee his 2025 salary if he were to get injured. (they cannot cut an injured player, and if he’s on the team on March 17th his $37 million salary would be guaranteed.)

No matter what Russell continues to be an expensive line item as his 2024 salary of $39 million is already guaranteed and even if they cut him will not save them that money.
