One Colorado couple spends a year building their Halloween yard, and you’re invited

Most of us call it a big Halloween if we get a pumpkin on the porch before Oct. 30. In Brighton, Bache and Misty Rojas work on theirs for more than a year. The couple turns the front yard of their Lark Avenue home into a full-blown Halloween destination, and almost everything in it is built by hand.
This year’s theme is post-apocalyptic, with a “virus” spreading through the neighborhood. The yard has hand-painted gravestones and glowing fluorescent science experiments, and a “Halloween cure” is in the works, though there’s a long line to get it. The couple says the display is never too scary. It does include a funny warning for neighborhood nuisances: speeders, porch pirates and pushy door-to-door salespeople, all hanging in body bags.
The Rojases have gone all out every year since 2020, with a new theme each time. They say the project is about more than scaring the neighbors. “We get a lot of joy out of this, we actually have fun doing some DIY together,” Bache Rojas told FOX31. “It’s like marriage building.” Word has gotten around, too. Rojas said some visitors drive almost an hour to see it. Last year at least 200 trick-or-treaters showed up, and the couple ran out of candy.
You can drive by anytime between now and Halloween to see the display at 1298 Lark Ave. in Brighton. If you want the full experience, stop by on Halloween night, Saturday, Oct. 31, when the “virus” comes to life and the couple hands out treats for free. Be a good guest: drive slowly through the neighborhood, park legally and stay off the lawn. You don’t want to end up on next year’s speeder list.
