Hurricane force winds likely in Colorado this weekend

Apr 4, 2024, 5:02 PM | Updated: Apr 5, 2024, 8:11 am

To be classified as a hurricane, a tropical cyclone must have one-minute-average maximum sustained winds at least 74 mph… Based on that, parts of Colorado will likely feel like we’re in a hurricane this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, very strong and damaging winds are expected on Saturday (Apr. 6) on the Colorado Front Range and in parts of the Eastern Plains region.

The winds are expected to start gusting on Saturday morning, increasing through the night before diminishing on Sunday. Gusts of up to 75 miles per hour will be possible.

The impacted area included in the alert encompasses the Denver metro, the I-25 corridor, Fort Collins, and Colorado Springs, as well as much of the northeastern plains and the central mountain region.

Obviously fire of any sort should be avoided during these conditions.
