How Much Jail Time Do Funeral Home Operators Who Sell Body Parts Serve? Colorado Duo Finds Out

Jan 4, 2023, 5:28 PM

I believe I can safely say most of us never have to worry about how much time you’d spend in jail for stealing and selling body parts from a corpse. However, there are a couple of people in Colorado who just found out the answer to that question…

The operators of Sunset Mesa Funeral Home in Montrose, Colorado have been sentenced to federal prison for illegally selling body parts or entire bodies without consent.

Megan Hess, the 46-year-old former funeral director, has been sentenced to 20 years after pleading guilty to mail fraud and aiding and abetting. In the plea agreement, Hess admits to stealing the bodies and body parts of hundreds of victims between 2010 and 2018.

Shirly Koch, 69, was also sentenced on this case for one count of mail fraud and aiding and abetting. She will serve 15 years in federal prison.

Ummmm, yuck!!
