Fizz’s Top 5 Colorado Diners

I need to get something off my chest: I am a diner person. I don’t need a “deconstructed eggs Benedict with a saffron-infused hollandaise reduction served on a reclaimed barn-wood plank.” I need a booth with duct tape on the seat, a server who calls me “hon” and a cup of coffee that was brewed sometime before I walked in but nobody’s really sure when. Colorado does diners better than people give it credit for, and I’ve got the cholesterol numbers to prove it. Here are the five best.

No. 5 — The Golden Diner, 700 12th St., Golden The Golden Diner has been quietly dominating breakfast in Golden for 15 years, which in diner time is basically just getting warmed up. Open daily from 7 a.m. to “2 p.m.-ish” — and the fact that they put “-ish” on their own hours tells you everything about the vibe — this place cranks out diner classics alongside creative curveballs like the Braised Pork Benedict and the Colorado Loco Moco. But let’s talk about the B.A.M.J.O.: bacon, avocado, and more stuff I’ll let you discover yourself, because half the fun is reading a menu item that sounds like a banjo and ordering it anyway. Dog paintings on the walls, Bloody Marys on the table, mountains out the window. If a diner had a vision board, this would be it.

No. 4 — Pete’s Kitchen, 1962 E. Colfax Ave., Denver Pete’s has been holding down East Colfax since 1942 — which means this diner has survived World War II, disco, the internet, and whatever Colfax was doing in the ’90s. It’s a Greek-family-owned, late-night institution where the gyros are legit, the hash browns are crispy and celebrities have been spotted eating here, presumably because even famous people occasionally need a 2 a.m. omelet and a reality check. If these walls could talk, they’d probably ask for more coffee.

No. 3 — Rosie’s Diner, 14061 E. Iliff Ave., Aurora Rosie’s is what happens when someone builds a time machine, sets it to 1955 and fills it with all-day breakfast and handmade milkshakes. The retro décor is so committed to the bit that you half expect the Fonz to walk in and smack the jukebox. The food is classic, the shakes are absurdly thick — we’re talking “structural integrity of wet cement” thick — and the whole vibe makes you want to call your grandma. Just a charming, colorful, no-nonsense diner in Aurora that doesn’t need a TikTok strategy because the pancakes speak for themselves.

No. 2 — Sam’s No. 3, Downtown Denver Sam’s has been serving Denver since 1927. Let that sink in. This diner is older than the Golden Gate Bridge. It survived the Great Depression, Prohibition and that brief period when everyone thought kale was a personality trait. Located steps from the 16th Street Mall, Sam’s dishes out some of the city’s best green chili — the kind that clears your sinuses and rewires your central nervous system — alongside diner staples that hit exactly right every single time. More than 3,200 Tripadvisor reviews and still standing. Legends only.

No. 1 — Silver Grill Cafe, 218 Walnut St., Fort Collins The Silver Grill isn’t just a diner, it’s MY hometown diner. It’s a Fort Collins monument that happens to serve food. It reportedly got its name when a hungry sign painter offered to letter “Silver Grill” on the front window in exchange for a pork chop lunch. That is the most diner origin story of all time. Now more than 90 years in, the Silver Grill is the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Northern Colorado, and its cinnamon rolls are the size of your head. I’m not exaggerating. They are literally plate-sized, warm, gooey gut-busters that should require a signed waiver. Pair one with the country fried steak and eggs, and you won’t need to eat again until Thursday. If you drive to Fort Collins and don’t stop here, I genuinely question your judgment as a human being.
