Corey Kent continues to rise in the country music world and it’s no surprise how he’s gotten to where he’s at.
Kent was born in Bixby, Oklahoma and grew up listening to country music with Garth Brooks having a huge influence on him. Singing at the age of three, Kent later learned how to play songs on the guitar. To this day, Kent still does not know how to read music.
Eight years later, Kent hit the stage and joined a Western Swing band and was named the lead singer.
At the age of 16, Kent bought a cheap ticket and went to a Willie Nelson concert, where he wrote on a piece of cardboard, “it’s my dream to play a song with you.” Nelson saw the sign and decided to let Kent come up on stage and sing a song with him.
After that performance, Kent knew he was all in on a music career and decided he wanted get serious and that included writing songs.
Kent then graduated from high school a year early so that he could move to Nashville at the age of 17.
After arriving in Nashville, Kent wanted to learn how to write songs and was given a list of 10 people that didn’t have publishing deals. This meant that they were not getting paid to write yet. Once he began writing with some of those writers, he met Jordan Davis early on and they began to write songs together.
In 2015, the Oklahoma native appeared on Season 8 of “The Voice” where Kent was coached by Blake Shelton. Kent unfortunately didn’t win it all, but he did finish in the Top 8.
In 2019, Kent got dropped from his publishing deal and decide to move to Frisco, Texas and perform at the local Honky-tonks. With a wife and kids at home, the pandemic hit and Kent knew he had to earn more money so he decided to work for a pavement company.
Once things opened back up in Texas, Kent was able to get back out perform once again.
Kent recorded his hit song, “Wild as Her” while still working at the pavement company. Interestingly enough, Kent didn’t write the song. It was written by Brett Tyler, Kelly Archer, and Morgan Wallen.
Once he put the song out, it went viral and the streaming numbers were far and away better than any of his other songs that he had put out.
Since then, Kent has headlined his own tours and has even opened up for artists like Jason Aldean, Ashley McBryde, and Parker McCollum.
Over his career so far, Kent has over 1 billion streams and has added a second No.1 hit on country radio, “This Heart.”
Kent will be performing at KYGO’s Birthday Bash on July 6 at Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre.
