Although there was news about a month ago that there could be a giant new spiraling observation tower taking over the Denver skyline at some point in the near future, most took it as a “I’ll believe it when I see it” sort of situation. Well, it looks like we might have to start believing it!
On Tuesday, an application for a concept review was submitted to the city and county of Denver for the tower at 1546 California Street in the Central Business District neighborhood. This lies between California and Welton Streets, just off 16th Street.
The initial description of the project is a 673-foot-tall observation “spiral tower” with a new supporting building or structure on the first floor. The tower would be about the size of a 30-story building, making it the fourth-tallest building in Denver.
For the plan to continue, it will need to go through several reviews, including zoning, district, landmark and transportation review. It would also need several referrals, including referrals from the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Denver International Airport.
