Denver is tracking your Bluetooth usage for traffic data

Denver, CO – The City of Denver is using Bluetooth tracking devices to monitor traffic, but assures that all phone data is scrambled and no identifying information is involved. The devices help the city analyze speed and travel times on city streets to make data-driven decisions.

While there is no opt-out option for the tracking program, the city emphasizes that the data is secure and cannot be traced back to individuals. The program aims to improve traffic safety and pedestrian safety through inter-government research and data analysis.  Despite concerns about privacy and lack of opt-out option, the city plans to expand the program with a $1.2 million grant.

The expansion of the program will allow for better traffic analysis and help identify areas where traffic may be slowed due to crashes or emergencies.
